Teenage Sensation Paulie Colagiovanni Crowned Lucas Oil ESS Champion for 2019. Takes Home over $9,000 from the $72,000 Banquet Payout

VERNON, NY – The Vernon Downs Casino and Resort Hotel was the site for the 2019 version of the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints (ESS) Banquet which brought the curtain down on the 36^th Anniversary Season. History was made as 18-year-old Paulie Colagiovanni was crowed the ESS champion which made him the youngest in the history of the club.

With more than 20 different drivers collecting from the over $50,000 cash point fund, with added prizes which included the Lucky Giveaway Program, the total payout for the topped $72,000.

On the strength of his seven wins this past season, the Cicero, NY native won his first title besting Chuck Hebing, Matt Tanner, Jason Barney and Billy VanInwegen in the final points rundown. Not only did he win the overall Lucas Oil title but also claimed the NAPA Auto Parts US Tour, the Ohsweken Speedway Canada Tour, the E&V Energy I90/I81 Series and the Donath Motorworx CNY Speedweek brought to you by Stirling Lubricants title.

The 2018 ESS champion Steve Poirier came to the banquet to hand the championship eagle trophy to Colagiovanni who will now have possession for one year.

Other point titles were claimed by Jordan Poirier who won the Fondations 4 Saisons Quebec Series, Dave Axton took the Cobra Coaches Dash Series, The Danny Willmes Enterprises Lap Leader points was won by five-time A-Main winner Jonathan Preston with Brett Wright winning the Fondations 55 Hard Charger points.

Many special awards were also given out during the night with Tyler Cartier taking the Lane’s Yamaha Rookie of Year and a $500 cash prize. Denny Peebles was chosen as the Most Improved driver in 2019 and also took a $500 cash prize. The Mach 1 Chassis Hard Luck Award went to Team Cobra, Chuck and Kelly Hebing as they received a complete Mach 1 Frame. Despite tough luck that plagued them all year, both still came to every full point event. Doug Emery won the annual Mechanic of the Year award which was voted on by his peers, he received a well-deserved standing ovation once announced.

Scott Holcomb received the prestigious John Zentner Memorial Award. Scott who returned to the tour from a hiatus of over 15 years, made all the events but two from his Granby, Connecticut home. The 2019 ESS Hall of Fame class inductee was Craig “Cricket” Keel. The two-time champion who also amassed 28 career victories will join many ESS greats in the Hall.

Many sponsors that contributed to the point fund were thanked which included: Lucas Oil, Hoosier Racing Tire, NAPA Auto Parts, Donath Motorworx, Ohsweken Speedway, Cobra Coaches, E&V Energy, Fondations 4 Saisons, Fondations 55 and Danny Willmes Enterprises.

Steve Poirier Finally Cracks Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint Victory Lane on Final Event of 2019

BROCKVILLE, ONT. – It was a family affair in the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint 25 lap feature event as Steve and Jordan Poirier started on the front row and put on a show for the fans as they drove away from the field in the early laps over Jason Barney, Matt Tanner and Tyler Cartier.

With drivers running the very bottom of the track Steve Poirier relied on his experience to hold off his determined nephew Jordan as the quickly closed in on lapped traffic as the field clicked off 12 laps in a big hurry. In traffic is where it got exciting for the fans as Steve drifted wide allowing Jordan to briefly taking the top spot on lap 13 with Jason Barney starting to make his way into the mix as well.

Steve would eventually retake the lead one lap later as the top 3 cleared traffic. On lap 15 Roger Levesque flipped his car in turn three bringing out the red flag. Roger was able to climb out unhurt in the accident. On the restart Steve Poirier would use the bottom to grab the lead but Matt Tanner would show his muscle as he took over 2nd and tried his best to run down the leader.

Over the final laps Steve Poirier finally put it all together and would charge to his 4th Empire Super Sprint victory at Brockville and to his relief, his first Empire Super Sprint win of 2019. Matt Tanner would take his 7th runner up finish of the year while Jordan Poirier, Jason Barney and Denny Peebles completed the top 5.

LUCAS WOLFE GOES BACK TO BACK AT OUTLAW SPEEDWAY IN $3,000 DUTCH HOAG MEMORIAL

The 360 Sprints were the headline division on this night as the Lucas Oil ESS Sprints staff did the officiating, found a solid 24 car field take to the Fast 4/10 of a mile clay oval. Early evening qualifying heats went to Will Glover, Jordan Thomas and Jonathan Preston.

With nearly two inches of rain fall earlier in the week in the Upstate Region of New York it was definitely a very fast race track and with cold temperatures all evening long it kept plenty of moisture in the speedway providing for unbelievably fast times and a tacky/heavy cushion.

In hot laps, Canadian, Jim Huppunen set fast time with a lap of 13.321; however it was Jonathan Preston that blistered the track with a time of 12.721 in winning heat race number three. It should also be noted that on this night the 360 sprint lap times were comparable to the 410 sprint times when the Tony Stewart ASCoC Series visited Outlaw Speedway in June.

When it was time for the 25 lap A Main and by the luck of the top twelve re-draw, Will Glover and Jonathan Preston brought the field to the opening green flag.

Preston picked right up in the feature where he left off in his qualifying heat by bolting away from the rest of the field in the opening laps.

The first of five yellow flags would fly on lap two as newly crowned ESS Series Champion; Paulie Colagiovanni dropped over the top of the banking in turns three and four bringing out the caution.

On the restart Preston again walked away from the rest of the field and within three laps was back into lap traffic. The second caution would wave on lap ten for the machine of Will Glover who did a half spin in turn two.

On the restart Preston was again in command until lap twelve and he would succumb to a flat right rear tire and apparent suspension damage ending any chance he had of backing up his ESS win at Outlaw this past May 17.

From there Jason Barney would assume the lead as a pack of hungry competitors were in tow.

Caution number four occurred on lap fifteen for the sixth place running machine of Jordan Thomas and it was on the ensuing restart that things would really heat up at the top of the field.

Lucas Wolfe who started inside the fifth row had worked his machine into second place and after a spirited battle with Barney made a gutsy move to the outside and took over the lead on lap seventeen.

Scott Holcomb had a right rear tire explode entering turn number one on lap eighteen bringing out the fifth and final yellow flag and from that point Wolfe was able to keep Barney at bay and went on to his second consecutive 360 win as part of the Dutch Hoag Memorial Weekend at the track.

A disappointed Jason Barney settled for a well-deserved second place finish while local favorite, Kyle Drum rounded out the top three podium finishers. Jim Huppunen and Pete Richardson rounded out the top five.

JOE TRENCA WALKS AWAY WITH $5,000 AS OUTLAW SPEEDWAY FALL NATIONALS 360 SPRINT WINNER

(Dundee, NY) Joe Trenca took full advantage of his pole position starting position in winning the 30 lap feature and the $5000 that went along with it as 360 Sprint Champion of the 4^th Annual Outlaw Speedway Fall Nationals. By virtue of picking up the Dash win the previous night, Trenca and Jared Zimbardi brought the twenty-four car field to the opening green flag. Only two yellow flags slowed the pace with the first coming on lap ten and the second and final caution on lap thirteen and in both cases Trenca was not going to be denied a victory in the prestigious Fall Nationals event. From the opening green and after each restart Trenca was able to open up a comfortable advantage over Zimbardi as both Davey Franek who started ninth on the grid and Paulie Colagiovanni who lined up in fifth were making their move to the front. Zimbardi, who has had an obvious love affair with Outlaw Speedway over the years winning numerous A Main events along with continual top five finishes had nothing for Trenca and as the laps were winding down had to fight off the challenge of Colagiovanni who was able to get around the Bradford, Pa speedster and set sail for the high flying Trenca. However, without the help of any additional yellow flags to tighten up the field it was too much of a margin to make up and as they crossed the finish line to complete the 30 lap feature Joe Trenca held a comfortable second and a half advantage as Colagiovanni had to settle for a well-deserved runner up finish. Zimbardi was able to hold on for third at the end chased across the line by Franek and Matt Farnham who rounded out the top five.

Some thirty-two 360 Sprints were on hand requiring four qualifying heats which were won by Jordan Thomas, Steve Doell, Matt Farnham and Derek Locke. Denny Peebles won the B-Main as Farnham picked up the Dash victory.

The A. Verdi Storage Containers along with the Lucas ESS 360 Sprints will be back at Outlaw Speedway as part of the 4^th Annual Dutch Hoag Weekend in October for a $3000 to win event.

OHSWEKEN, Ontario (September 13, 2019) – Rain was all around Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night, but the wet weather held off just long enough for all of the scheduled racing to be completed in the Night Before the Nationals presented by Burger Barn and Bradshaw Brothers.

Cory Turner, Jason Barney, and Parker Price-Miller took full advantage of their opportunity by claiming wins in the Triple 15’s for the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars and locking themselves into Saturday night’s Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Main. Meanwhile, Logan Shwedyk and Kyle Wert finished their seasons off with wins in the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock and HRW Automotive Mini Stock divisions, respectively.

The first of the three Triple 15’s began with Mark Smith and Cory Turner on the front row. Smith was looking for the third Night Before the Nationals win of his career, but Turner had other ideas and took the lead from Smith on lap three. Smith spent the remainder of the caution-free race unsuccessfully trying to chase Turner down, but Turner took his first Night Before the Nationals win by 1.239 seconds. Smith settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Jared Horstman, Shone Evans, and Ryan Turner.

Dylan Westbrook and Jason Barney made up the front row for the second Triple 15, but third place starter Max Stambaugh quickly entered the fray to lead the first lap. Barney did not allow Stambaugh to get away though, and took the lead at the start/finish line at the completion of lap two. Yellow flags for Tyler Rand and Al Gilleta Jr. followed, but Barney stayed ahead of the field to take the win by 1.232 seconds over Mitch Brown. Stambaugh, row four starter Sam Hafertepe Jr., and row five starter Jordan Poirier rounded out the top five.

The third Triple 15 of the night started with Parker Price-Miller and Jonathan Preston on the front row. It appeared two-time CSCN winner Price-Miller was going to run away with the win, but Matt Farnham had other ideas; the rookie 360 Sprint Car driver drove past Price-Miller on lap five and began to open a lead. Farnham’s lead shrunk as he negotiated traffic and Price-Miller adjusted his line. Disaster almost struck for the leaders with two laps to go, as Price-Miller had a big run out of turn four and almost got squeezed into the wall as Farnham drifted up the track. Farnham fought off a slide job from Price-Miller in turn one on the last lap, but Price-Miller drove around the outside to take the win in turns three and four. Farnham settled for second, followed by Preston, Jake Brown, and Billy VanInwegen.

Shone Evans, Mark Smith, Steve Poirier, Mitch Brown, Jared Zimbardi, and Dylan Westbrook claimed heat race wins for the 49 car field. Triple 15 winners Cory Turner, Jason Barney, and Parker Price-Miller earned guaranteed starting spots in Saturday night’s 35 lap Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Main, and will start 11th or better in the $10,000 USD-to-win event

POIRIER PERFECT IN EXTENDED NY NATIONALS WEEKEND SWEEP AT LAND OF LEGENDS

In what may amount to his swan song on the Northeastern sprint car circuit, Frenchman Steve Poirier was right on key after sweeping the extended three-day weekend at Land Of Legends Raceway.

The rain-delayed New York Nationals short-track extravaganza closed out Sunday afternoon and for first-ever 360 Sprint Car event winner Poirier, he probably wouldn’t mind an entire speedweek at the Ontario County Fairgrounds oval where he now owns an even half-dozen feature wins in winged competition.

His latest sprint car triumph at the hallowed half-miler rewarded ‘Fireball’ with the biggest payday ever, a whopping $5,000 top-prize for 17 minutes of work in the headline NYN 30-lap A-Main. He opened the inaugural sprint car spectacular on Friday with a ‘Twin 15’ qualifying race win before placing first in the ‘Pole Dash’ on Saturday.

“It’s really nice to be the first winner of the New Yorker at Land of Legends, a track I really appreciate,” remarked Poirier, who registered wins at LOLR in both Patriot Sprint Group and Empire Super Sprint-sanctioned events, with his first checkered flag taken in 2010. “Its far from home but I always try to make the travel here. Even with the rain the track was smooth and as good as it could be for a day show.”

The top-two finishers in each of the Twin 15s on Friday and four heat race winners on Saturday contended in the all-important ‘Pole Dash’ on day two to determine the the starting order for the front four rows in the inaugural NY Sprint Nationals. Poirier dominated the six-lap affair to earn the point, yet still had to wait one more day to show his skills as rain ultimately postponed any victory lane celebration.

Drivers faced a smooth, slick surface upon their return Sunday, magnified further after the 20-car field filed onto the track following closure of the lead-off 50-lap Sportsman feature. Despite the change in condition, the no. 28FM FM Industries-4 Seasons Foundations-Fuzion Electric-Mega Pumping/Eagle showed no side effects with Poirier behind the wheel as he sped out to a comfortable lead at the outset of the 30-lapper.

“It helps the driver when you’ve got a good piece under you,” Poirier noted. “The car was still good running on the rubber laid down even though it changed the dynamics a little bit. It was one of those weekends when you have a good car and a lot of things tend to turn out in your favor.”

Matt Tanner had other ideas as he overtook Jason Barney for second on lap four and crept closer to Poirier as the green flag laps clicked off. Barney suddenly lost a right-rear wheel entering turn four to incur the first slowdown on lap 14, and two laps later a red flag flew as the result of Shawn Donath’s mount briefly coming to rest atop the same pink #48A sprinter that Darryl Ruggles had borrowed for the day from his daughter, Alysha Bay, Friday night’s 305 winner.

The ensuing lap 16 restart proved pivotal as Tanner pulled alongside Poirier exiting turn two and when the lead duo reached corner number three a new leader had emerged. Undaunted by Tanner’s bold maneuver, Poirier remained on the gas ahead of ESS hotshoe Paulie Colagiovanni while Billy VanInwegen joined the chase with 10 to go.

“Wasn’t sure how things would end up when I lost the lead, especially on a track that was getting harder to pass on as more rubber started to build up,” Poirier stated. “I was just staying in second, unless we get into traffic I might have a chance.”

Continuing to shadow Tanner high and low in traffic, Poirier caught the leader on the low side and in a final push to the front, forged the final lead change rounding turn one with less than three laps to go. The rest was easy as the veteran from St-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, Que. cruised home for a six car-length victory over Tanner, with Colagiovanni, VanInwegen and Jordan Thomas filling out the front-five.

“My car didn’t go on that restart, I was spinning tires, especially out of turn two,” Poirier said. “When I saw Matt I tried to push it as hard as I could into turn three but he was just faster for that lap. After a couple more laps my tires came back in, maybe I was trying to save them too much early. I had a perfect line out of turn four and maybe surprised him in one and had a lucky move there. So the luck was good for us this weekend but I think we had a really good car. It was perfect every time we hit the race track with a lot of different conditions.”

“I want to make sure to be competitive when I retire, don’t want to go out when I’m struggling. Missed a lot of races this season but have done pretty well the last month. So its nice to end this year on a high note,” added Poirier, now with an all-time high ESS count of 74 A-Main triumphs.

Despite suffering a bent frame after contact with Roger Levesque sent his #45 Cobra Motorcoaches & Homes/X-1 rolling over during warm-ups on Saturday then electing to sit out Sunday’s finale, the show-up points awarded were just enough for Chuck Hebing to retain his LOLR 360 Sprint Classic Series title by a scant three markers over Colagiovanni. Ironically, both Hebing (245 pts) and Colagiovanni (242) competed in just four of the five mini-series A-Mains, while both their nearest chasers Tanner (217) and Jonathan Preston (210) ran all five.

“Think I burned the tires at the end,” figured runner-up Tanner, who won the first of four heats on Saturday to qualify for the pole dash in which he finished third. “Before that I knew the only way I could get by Steve was using the high side on the restart before he got his momentum back up. It worked for awhile, just ran out of laps to keep it up there when it counted.”

Varin Breaks Out of Slump with Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint Win at Weedsport Speedway

Weedsport, NY – The series returned to that historic facility on Labor Day with Varin finally having everything go his way. Varin started on the front row of the 25-lap feature event, led every lap en route to scoring his first win of the 2019 season while collecting a $2,000 paycheck and his third series win at Weedsport.

“That was a blast,” said Varin after the win. “There is nothing like ‘The Port.’ You get to ride up against the fence, hammer down or you can go down on the bottom and crawl. You can’t ask for a better race track than that.”

It was Varin’s race from the get-go after he started in the second spot via the redraw. He jumped out early on Joe Trenca running away from the field on the cushion in the early laps.

By lap five, Varin was working traffic with Jason Barney tracking him in second. That was until lap six when Barney abruptly pulled off into the infield ending his chase for a second consecutive win.

Tyler Cartier brought caution on lap nine as he slowed in turns one and two. At this point Varin got a new challenger in Paulie Colagiovanni. When the green lights came back on Colagiovanni challenged Varin on the bottom, but as he had done at the beginning, he opened up the gap on the field.

Varin’s second foray into traffic developed just past the halfway point on lap 14. He kept working the top of the speedway while Colagiovanni pursued through the middle of the race track. Varin’s line was perfect in traffic as he was up by the wall while Colagiovanni struggled a bit to get by the slower cars.

Varin kept up the intense pace with Colagiovanni trying to get close enough to challenge. Varin was able to continue to stretch the lead as the laps clicked off as he was more maneuverable in traffic.

On lap 23 the driveline in Scott Holcomb’s No. 91 went south causing him to stop on the backstretch. Everyone got one last shot at Varin on the restart as Colagiovanni and others looked to steal the win.

Varin restarted off the bottom of turn four allowing him to get the jump on Colagiovanni. He won the race to the first turn. He slid from the bottom to the top and pulled away. He led the final laps to take the win.

“We had to do something,” commented Varin. “I couldn’t give anyone an opportunity to slide job us so I took the bottom. The car was phenomenal tonight.”

Colagiovanni finished second. He fought the good fight in the closing laps, but had nothing for Varin. The second-place effort was good enough to seal the overall tour title for the teenage. The championship is the first of his career with the series.

“I caught the wall a couple times there off of four,” said Colagiovanni about the race. “I switched lanes and tried running the bottom. Lapped traffic was tough in this one. I got stuck behind people a couple times. The car was good and this is a good run.”

Jonathan Preston secured the third position at checkered flag beating out Larry Wight. Preston was the winner at Weedsport the last time the series visited the facility. He raced forward, but wasn’t able to challenge for his third win of the weekend.

“I was a tick tight,” commented Preston. “The harder I drove it, the better it got. At the end I was giving it all she had.”

Wight crossed the line in fourth, but was placed last in the finishing order for not going directly to the scales at the conclusion of the A-Main. This moved Trenca up to the fourth spot with Tommy Wickham completing the top five.

Barney Battles Poirier Late to Win Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint Series A-Main at Fulton Speedway

FULTON, NY– Jason Barney started the season red hot with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints. He won two of the first three feature events. As the summer hit things went south for the Brewerton, N.Y., driver. He’s struggled trying to find the speed that got him wins early in the season.

Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, Barney got his mojo back. Barney won the 25-lap A-Main in impressive fashion charging from third on a late restart to the lead. He then battled multi-time series champion Steve Poirier for the win. Barney just beat Poirier to the line for the $2,000 payday and the much-needed confidence boost.

“This is pretty nuts,” said an emotional Barney in victory lane. “We gave one away last week in Granby on the last lap. I didn’t sleep at all this week. I really messed up last night and put my favorite car in the front stretch wall. I slept about five minutes. I was just disappointed in myself. I didn’t think I could win races anymore. It creeps in; it’s crazy. We have awesome race cars and an awesome race team. I’m just really happy to get a win. It was much needed.”

Jonathan Preston was the last to draw, but he started on the pole alongside Poirier for the green. Poirier wrestled the lead from him on the opening circuit. Preston battled hard and on lap five was able to go by Poirier in turns three and four to take his shot at the front.

On the next lap, Davie Franek made it a three-car race for the number one position. Preston led with Franek in the mix along with Poirier. Preston continued to keep his No. 22 on top of the field.

Traffic appeared for Preston just before the race reached the halfway point. Luckily for Preston, his line on the top was open nearly all the way around the track as slower cars were focused on running the middle and the bottom of the track.

With Preston and Poirier solidified out front, Barney was steady throughout. He was methodical on the bottom reaching the top five at halfway before taking over third on lap 19. He still had some distance to make up on the top two.

His break came on lap 21. The only caution of the race was drawn by a spinning Ryan Harrison in turn four. He came to a stop setting up a restart with Preston and Poirier on the front row and Barney lining up on the bottom in third.

Preston elected to refire from the outside lane. Poirier got an excellent start pulling even with Preston going into turn one. This allowed him to pull a slide job through turn two in order to briefly take the lead. As the top two went high, Barney went low and drove by both drivers down the backstretch.

Barney led lap 22 at the line, but Poirier wasn’t done. Poirier came back at Barney on the high-side of turns three and four on the next lap and just inched in front at the line.

Barney didn’t give up on the bottom, he stayed in his line with Poirier powering around the top. They came to white flag right together once again with Barney low and Poirier next to him on the outside.

The final lap was going to determine the winner. Barney continued catching the moisture on the bottom while Poirier had his right rear Hoosier Tire against the cushion. They were nearly even coming off of turn two.

Barney dove low through and four with Poirier trying to carry momentum around him on the top. As they came off the corner Barney slipped up in front of Poirier slowing his pace just enough that he was able to grab the checkers.

“I knew I could be good on the bottom, but he was good running three and four on the top,” stated Barney. “I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t really run up there. If I enter up there, he’s just going to slide me. So, I figured I better go up, then go down and go back up again. That was my only chance. I still thought he was going to get me.”

Poirier, the eight-time and defending series champion, matched his best finish of the season crossing the line in second. It was a great race at the front. Poirier just needed a little bit more to get by Barney on the final lap.

“That was fun,” said Poirier of the race with Barney. “I gave it all I had. We’ve had a tough year. We haven’t won an ESS race so far. I was doing all I could. I thought when I got by Jonathan I had to protect the outside. I got a bit too high and forced the issue a little bit there. Then I saw Jason on the inside. I tried some different things and raced him as hard as I could. That was a fun race.”

After sweeping the action on Friday, Preston had to settle for third on this night after Barney and Poirier drove by on the final restart. He felt like was in trouble when the yellow came out and that proved to be the difference maker as he had a comfortable lead prior to the restart.

“The car was really good in clean air and traffic,” cited Preston. “I was just on cruise control out there. I didn’t want a restart. I knew he was going to pull me on a restart. It just doesn’t take off, but what can you do.”

Billy VanInwegen rallied late to get up to fourth with Chuck Hebing having another solid night to complete the top five.

Jonathan Preston Sweeps Double Features at Brewerton Speedway with Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints

BREWERTON, NY– Jonathan Preston broke out the broom on Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway.

Preston set fast time in timed warm-ups, won his heat race then went on to win back-to-back 25-lap A-Main events presented by E & V Energy, NAPA Auto Parts and Mach1 Chassis. The Romulus, N.Y., driver took home over $4,000 while claiming his fourth and fifth career Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint victories.

“I don’t know what to say,” stated Preston after winning the second feature. “This car is on rails. The track is beautiful. It was my night. This is my little engine, my older car, but it seems to be old faithful.”

Preston started on the outside of the front row for the first 25-lap feature event. Preston won the race off of turn four at the green with Billy VanInwegen falling in line quickly behind him.

Preston had the lead on lap two when Kyle Moffitt flipped in turn one. Moffitt went end over end bringing out the red flag. Thankfully he was okay after the crash.

The ensuing double-file restart gave VanInwegen a shot at Preston again, but like the initial start, it was Preston powering out in front. He got to the cushion and pulled away as VanInwegen searched for something more. Eventually he also made his way to the top of the speedway.

Another red came on lap 12 just as Preston had caught traffic. Denny Peebles hit the wall and came to a stop on the front stretch. Flames erupted from his car. They were extinguished quickly with Peebles walking away uninjured in the incident.

One last double-file restart put Preston and VanInwegen side-by-side again. Preston maintained his perfection on restarts keeping everyone under control at the green.

Preston’s second foray into traffic came on lap 18. This time the traffic was a struggle for Preston. Several were running the same lane as him on the top-side of the speedway. Preston tried to battle his way through, but he was slowed enough that VanInwegen got to his bumper.

The final three laps of the race were a dogfight in traffic between Preston and VanInwegen. VanInwegen tried and tried to make the bottom lane go. It just didn’t have enough grip. He pulled even off of turn two on the final lap. Preston went to the top in turns three and four. The momentum gained was enough to propel him to the win.

“They were top and bottom,” mentioned Preston of traffic. “I was faster on the top. I sailed it in there a couple times, but it’s so hard to get a run.”

VanInwegen came up a half a car-length short of claiming victory. It was his best run at the Brewerton Speedway to date as he had to settle for second.

“I hate to give one way from the pole like that, but man he was dominant,” cited VanInwegen. “I got the wing back under that last caution. We got to him in lapped traffic. I gave him everything I had. I just couldn’t stick the bottom enough to pull it off.”

Danny Varin overcame several challenges to get a podium effort. Varin not only battled handling problems, he was also in a fight for much of the race with Jason Barney, Larry Wight and Davie Franek. He outlasted all of them to get third.

“The podiums are nice,” said Varin. “They pay the bills and keep us going. The car was no good tonight. We got some work to do. We’ve been working on it. We’ve been trying to figure something out, but right now I can’t stand this race car.”

Barney came from the 12^th position to finish in fourth with Franek hanging on at the checkered to finish in fifth
